Sloped front yards look great on paper - until you're dealing with erosion, runoff, and a lawn that's tough to maintain or even walk across safely. That's exactly the kind of challenge this property had. The grade dropped sharply from the house down to the street, and without proper structure holding it in place, that hillside wasn't doing the home any favors.

Here's what we built: a full stone block retaining wall running the length of the front yard, designed to hold the grade back and give the property a clean, defined edge from the street. The block work has a natural split-face texture that gives it a stacked stone look - sturdy and sharp at the same time. We tied in decorative pillar columns with lantern-style post caps to frame the staircase entry, which runs straight up the center of the wall and gives the property a proper, usable access point from street level.

The wall is also working behind the scenes. A system like this handles drainage, prevents soil movement, and protects the yard from breaking down over time. That's the practical side of it. But when you build it right, the structural piece becomes a design feature too - and that's what separates a good retaining wall from a great one.

We finished out the planting bed along the base of the wall with a row of evergreen arborvitae, evenly spaced and freshly planted. They'll fill in over time and add year-round greenery that ties the whole front yard together. The result is a property that went from a hard-to-manage slope to a defined, well-structured landscape with a clear entry point and serious curb appeal.
